  9. Version Information Viewer (VERSHOW.EXE) is a Win32 utility which can be used
  10. to view the VERSIONINFO resource contained within Win32 PE-type executables.
  11.  
  12. Because Win32 Portable Executables (PE) store their version information in
  13. Unicode format, none of the many Win16 version information viewers can
  14. recognize or parse the information.  I find it quite useful to examine this
  15. resource in EXE's and DLL's in order to determine which applications use them,
  16. what version they are when competing applications both install the same file,
  17. and to get a general description of the purpose of a file.  Therefore, this
  18. utility was born.

  20. No help file is included with this utility because its use was designed to be
  21. highly discoverable.  The user interface consists of a common File Open dialog
  22. with some new controls.  As the user selects files in the File Open section of
  23. the dialog, information about the file and, if possible, its version
  24. information are displayed in the lower half of the dialog.  Because this
  25. utility only recognizes Win32 PE-type executables, any non-complying files
  26. are not processed.

  28. Occasionally, some Win32 executables either do not have version information,
  29. or their developer did not follow the standard format for the resource.
  30. In the latter case, 3 radio buttons are provided to select the type of
  31. detection that will be used.  For the default, Auto-Detect, the utility
  32. looks for a language identifier in the VERSIONINFO resource and, if found,
  33. displays the appropriate version information record.  If the Unicode radio
  34. button is selected, this step is skipped and Unicode English is the assumed
  35. language.  Alternately, ANSI English can be selected as the assumed language.
  36. By using one of these three settings, I have not been able to find any file's
  37. version information that VERSHOW cannot parse.

  39. To install this utility, move the file CTL3D32.DLL to the <NT>\SYSTEM32
  40. directory.  If a file of the same name already exists there, compare its
  41. date and time with this one and keep the most recent version.  Place the
  42. remaining files (VERSHOW.*) in a directory of your choice.  Optionally, you
  43. can add an icon to a Program Manager group to simplify access to this
  44. utility.
